Hope Hicks says Trump called the blame for Jan. 6 unfair

  • The House Select Committee Jan. 6 released nearly 50 witness transcripts on Friday.
  • A transcript details the committee’s interview with Hope Hicks, a former Trump ally.
  • “I just think he felt like … to blame him for everything that happened wasn’t fair,” she said.

In a stream of witness depositions released Friday by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, a transcript reveals that former White House communications director Hope Hicks told the committee that former President Donald Trump felt like he was being blamed for the riot on Capitol Hill was unfair.

Once one of Trump’s closest allies, Hicks, 34, volunteered to testify, a video aired during the committee’s final hearing on Monday. She was one of the few people in Trump’s orbit who communicated to Trump that he was losing the 2020 election, according to the transcript released Friday.

Hicks spoke with Trump on January 11, 2021, days after the deadly riot.

“He asked me if I thought it was really as bad as everyone made it out to be. And my answer was, yes, I thought it was,” the transcript reads.

She added: “I think he felt it wasn’t fair – the response to it wasn’t fair.”

Hicks, who will step down from the White House on Jan. 12, 2021, said she told Trump he should change his approach and appear more “rational” to observers.

“And I just said to him, I think, you know, the more rational you are and the more restrained you are, the more extreme everyone else is going to look, so things like banning you from social media I think will hit back, and that, you know, if you focus on the things that people really care about and not the election, I think things will quickly get better for you, politically, Hicks told the committee.

She said Trump also asked her if she believed the election was stolen, which she denied.

“And then we just exchanged a little, you know, pleasantries, and that was it,” she added.

“I just think he felt like, you know, blaming him for everything that happened wasn’t fair,” Hicks continued.

The committee released a thorough report Thursday on its findings investigating the Capitol riot and how Trump played a role in it. They also recommended to the Justice Department that Trump be prosecuted for his role in the uprising.

Hicks was not immediately available for comment.
